Why do the drains in a 1950s house here keep blocking?

Do the old steel water pipes need replacing?
Many postwar services here are steel, rusting internally until flow drops to a trickle or the pipe splits at a weak thread. We quote the replacement after seeing what is in the ground.
Does the slope towards the rail cutting cause drainage problems?

Does this pocket ever flood?
No. This is high ground that stays clear of flooding, and runoff heads for the Fernleigh corridor fast. Only the low corners pond, and only when the street pits are blocked.
